Corksol Render

What is CorkSol render used for?

CorkSol is a type of spray-on wall coating that is increasingly being used in place of traditional sand and cement-based renders. It’s predominantly made from cork, so it’s eco-friendly, and it shares many of the same properties as this natural material.

CorkSol render can be used to:

  • Overspray on solid render. If the existing render is solid we can respray a top coat onto existing without the need to replace old render or basecoat.
  • cover stains and signs of ageing
  • give your home a modern, stylish, and uniform finish in the colour of your choice
  • insulate your home from the outside-in
  • TIWI, thin internal wall insulation – used to protect and insulate internal walls and can be skimmed over

Cork is a natural insulator, which makes it ideal for rendering your exterior walls, and it’s more effective than traditional sand/cement renders.

It acts like a thermal blanket wrapped around your house, stopping heat from escaping – a whopping 30% reduction. With CorkSol render you can save up to 15% on your heating bills and cut your carbon emissions.

It’s also effective at blocking out sound – it can absorb up to 38dB of noise, so if your property is roadside, you can look forward to enjoying more peace and quiet.

What makes cork spray so popular is that you don’t have to remove the old surface materials first, because CorkSol render can be sprayed over the top. The super adhesive coating can be used on nearly all surfaces for a long-lasting finish.

CorkSol over pebble-dash

If your home has a 1970’s or 80’s pebble-dash exterior, then you might assume that it’s too costly to remove it, but with CorkSol render you don’t need to because you can spray over it. Without the hassle of removing the old pebble-dash, you can expect the job to be finished quicker and with a lot less disruption and mess.

CorkSol render is sprayed on in thin, even layers, and using this technique, an approved applicator can cover large areas quickly. When it comes to exterior walls, it adheres to most surfaces, including:

  • pebble-dash/roughcast
  • sand/cement render (with or without lime)
  • in-situ or pre-cast concrete
  • brick
  • stone
  • asbestos cement panels
  • wood
  • metal sheets
  • render board/structural insulated panels (SIP)

Silicone-based renders, coatings, and fillers are the only materials not suitable for use with sprayed-on cork.

Bookmarksgrove right at the coast

CorkSol render is flexible, so it moves with your house through the seasons, and this elasticity makes it resistant to cracking.

It's also weather-proof and resistant to organic growth (such as algae) so it doesn't discolour or fade over time. You can expect it to look fresher and cleaner for longer, and any marks or stains that are made accidentally can be washed off with ease.

CorkSol is so confident that their cork spray is durable, that they offer a 25-year-warranty on their sprayed coatings. It's guaranteed to last longer than re-painting, and it's cheaper than re-rendering using traditional methods.

CorkSol render is available in 24 colours – you can pick from shades of grey and neutrals, or there are more colourful options, such as lavender, olive, and denim.

In an episode of Channel 4's Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud described cork spray as "tying the building into its setting." With so many shades to choose from, it's entirely possible to give your home a finish that matches its surroundings.

It also creates a uniform finish which is ideal if parts of your home have a different finish, i.e. an extension that doesn't look like the rest of the house. Using a spray-on coating can pull together these different elements to make a coherent whole.

The CorkSol website has a visualiser that you can use to see what your style of house would look like in your chosen shade. There are a range of options to choose from:

  • cottage
  • modern extension
  • semi-detached house
  • detached house
  • terrace
  • bungalow
  • three-storey new build

Once you've picked the style of house that looks most like your own, choose from the colour options to see what it would look like in the shades available.

The look of your home affects how you feel about it, and choosing a colour is a big decision, so if you're still not sure, you can request to see a sample.
